In UAE they created a Ministry of Tolerance to focus the collective love, attention and energy on building respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of the earth’s cultures. One of the programs to spread this culture is Champions of Tolerance. This week I was honored to work with passionate, engaged women from different Emirates and different sectors of the economy, facilitating open and vulnerable communication and sharing tools to grow compassion, mutual understanding, dialogue, conflict resolution, resilience and teamwork. Today these women go back to their own spheres of influence empowered and inspired to spread Tolerance through their actions and through initiatives. I’ve been going through some wildlife images for a client and this leopard is part of a black and white series I’ve sold and that even hangs in my own home.
As I looked through the images I came across the color version of this leopard cub feasting on a kill that I had watched his mother hunt the day before. This is the same picture; one B&W version and one captured in vivid technicolor.
Seeing the color image got me thinking; the process of transforming an image to B&W is called desaturation; meaning to take away the vividness of any colors.
For interior design purposes, I remember why I tested this image in black and white. The intent, right-down-the-lens, right-through-me stare of this leopard caught my eye immediately. However, it’s a pretty graphic image looking at the leopards bloody nose, the spine devoured down to the vertebrae as the body of this impala is slung over the branches. And let’s not forget the dangling organs
with visible veins. So I desaturated it. I took away the vividness of this moment.

I’ve always been inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall who said her first and greatest teacher was her dog, Rusty; teaching her that of course animals have feelings and moods and thoughts. Sending big love today to all the animals we share our hearts and lives with. I confess I’ve always had a soft spot for blondes of the horsey type. Even the name palomino rolls of my tongue with delight.
I felt so grateful when the owner of this beautiful stallion allowed me to play/work with him and get to know him more through our dialogue. Of course there were no words but absolutely a communication exchange.
This horse’s name is Mr. Moneymaker, likely because every foal he sired was blessed with his beautiful genetics, athleticism and good temper. Imagine riding the foothills of the American wild west with him as your partner.
So as he moved with and around me, I remember allowing the process to be slow and spacious, like a conversation with thoughtful pauses and peaceful silence between two present partners, just because I wanted to savor the experience. Sometimes, In those pauses in a dialogue, the chat room in my own head starts up. ‘I wonder if they’re bored?’
‘I wonder if he likes me?’
‘Am i good enough?’
Perhaps this happens to you too?

Regardless of what’s happening in the chat room, there comes a moment in each exchange for it to finish. For completion and acknowledgement of what you just shared.
This picture shows that moment in our horse-human conversation. The moment when I stop any expression of doing, any expression of work/play and just be.
Be available for connection.
Be an energetic beacon inviting connection.

And then, you
Stop.
Wait.
Trust.
Trust yourself.
Trust the process you’ve just been through.
Trust your partner.

It can feel like a vulnerable place to stand, but still you stand. And in a moment of grace there comes movement, the flick of the ear, the arch of the neck, one step towards your offer of connection. And that ripple of a question comes back to you with a tidal wave of answers:
‘Yes! I want to connect with you too’
‘I enjoyed this exchange too’
‘I would be happy to share space with you again’

Imagine the feeling of pure acceptance running through your body. To me, that feels like love. And the path to get there is trust.

I attended my first kirtan last night with @hiphopasana thanks to @jivamuktiwithdina and in the sweet company of @mobintsaadiyat and @jadewoodyoga. Sitting and singing in a language I don’t understand with a group of people that I mostly didn’t know reminded me of the power of ancient technologies as medicine for my modern soul.
Usually I’m so enamored with my ‘smart phone’ technology, it’s easy to forget the ancient technologies, almost every human culture has known, that transcend into expanded, even mystical, consciousness.
Some call these the technologies of magic; gateways that help one journey into the realms of deeper consciousness. I’m all for magic, but in this case, I like the word technology because it reminds me that through deep, systematic practice, these gateways are always available.
Consider when was the last time you danced? Drummed out a percussive beat or like kirtan, allowed the vibrations of singing to create an inner rhythm? Drank a calming brew or exchanged energy and information with the plant realm? Became conscious of a sleeping or waking dream?

When was the last time you said yes to journey inwards and deeper?

I hear about the phenomenon of beginner’s luck all the time and yet I think the more impactful phenomenon to consider and cultivate is beginner’s mind. Perhaps it even helps us to understand beginner’s luck?
When you do something for the first time you have few pressures or expectations Of what might happen, thereby leaving you wide open to every possible outcome from that experience. There’s no auto pilot in beginners mind. Full alert presence is most characteristic when trying something new.

I get to see beginners mind at work often because the work with horses is Something few people have ever experienced before. Perhaps also because a powerful 1000-pound sentient being is really good at capturing one’s full attention and imagination. Today, I’m off to do some work with the UAE Ministry of Tolerance, so I will have the opportunity to practice staying in beginner’s mind.

When you look at this picture of me and this beautiful buckskin horse, do you think we have clarity?
Does our energy match?
Do we seem to be ‘on the same page’?
Do either of us seem confused? Disengaged? Resistant?

I’m reflecting on a recent client session today, where the client said that when he had clarity he was able to trust himself, trust the process and trust his partner to accomplish their shared endeavor.
So I’m reflecting on the nature of clarity. To me it starts with an intention, it flows through the mind and body ideating and generating a field of possibilities and then it grounds itself in expression, action and movement in the world of form. Clarity that generates trust is not solely the domain of the brain and thinking. When it is expressed, a feedback loop opens that helps us to achieve it.
I practice expressing myself with clarity by communicating my ideas to non-verbal, non-human beings and being present with curiosity to the feedback loop that places me in. Each experiment, each tiny adjustment takes me closer to or further away from the intention. My body keeps the score in feelings and sensations that show me when I am in flow or stuck.

Those feelings and sensations become a part of my inner GPS, guiding me through life’s situations that have nothing to do with horses. The clear guidance from this inner gps helps me to trust myself, regardless of the circumstance I find myself in.
That’s where my reflection has landed me today. What does clarity mean to you?

Most people know the term “breaking a horse”. It’s the most common way of describing the process of introducing horses to human activities. In truth, some of the methods can be pretty brutal; dominating and controlling the animal until it bends to your will.

Frankly I’m not surprised we,humans, use this word. We break ourselves too.
With busyness.
With diets.
With perfection.
With comparison.
With criticism.
We dominate and control until the soft animal of our body and spirit bends to our will or the will of others.

When I look back and think of the way I spoke to myself, I cringe. Having an inner voice like that was like living in a bad neighborhood day after day. Always on alert. Always fearful. Never at peace.
then the other day, after a TRUE Leadership demonstration, @tara.hamilton.photography sent me this beautiful picture of an unconscious moment and I realized, I’ve changed.

I remember the softness of this horse’s fur. looking I realize I’m touching her in a most vulnerable place (one of only two on this prey animals body where she cannot see what I’m doing). And she in turn is pressing her muzzle into my arm in response; a safe spot for her to rest for a moment.
I have been gentled; another word most commonly associated with the process of introducing wild horses to humans with the intention of building trust and relationship.
Over the 10 years I’ve been partnering with horses, my inner world and outer world have begun to match.
My inner voice speaks words of kindness. It’s a sweet neighborhood to live in. Curiosity and intention lead to commitments and makes my will, willing. This place is full of contentment and at peace.
Thank you 📸 Tara for seeing the beauty in my world and reflecting it back for all to see. Thank you to all the horses that have been willing to invest in gentling me.
